#THE SHADOW YOU CAST PROFESSIONAL#
What example are you setting for them? To this day, I make decisions in working with others from the skills I learned from my first supervisor as a professional in the Boy Scouts. You have a major impact on your fellow workers. As a safety speaker many of you are my mentors as I learned safety from you. When you think of your mentors it is often easier to understand you are probably a mentor to many people whether they have told you or not. I suspect you could tell me of people in your life who have made a major impact and who aren’t even aware. You can probably think of people who you worked with who set the example of how the job should be done. In addition, there are all the outstanding speakers I have watched at the National Speakers Association.Ī good question to ask yourself is who mentored you? There will be some of the ones I have already mentioned. There are also many mentors who have influenced me as my teachers, scout and church leaders. My formal mentors I have met with and studied their techniques. Your children and friends see how you drive and that tells them what you expect out of them. You may never have considered yourself as someone’s mentor however I assure you that you are. It’s, can those watching you be safe when following you as their mentor. Whether you can get away with less than the safest actions isn’t the issue. First, think about the shadow you want to cast and then be sure your actions will create such a shadow.ĭo you want to be the example of safety excellence, which if people follow will bring them home safe everyday? Or, would you want to be the example, when followed leads to someone being injured. Of course, this applies to all areas of your life but today we will focus on safety. As a safety speaker I understand the importance of the shadow you cast. If you say one thing and do another your shadow will give you away. What shadow are you casting? What example for your family, friends, fellow leaders and fellow employees are you? Your shadow is the impression you show people by the actions you take. Safety Speaker John Drebinger Asks, “What Shadow are You Casting?”Īs a safety speaker let me share with you a safety discussion you should have with your experienced workers, actually, everybody.
